‘Most wanted’ Ulfa rebel killed

Militant identified as P.C. Ram’s murderer
Guwahati, Jan 14 : A Ulfa militant who was killed in an encounter with security forces at Geetanagar around midnight last night was identified today as Tapan Das, one of the “most wanted” rebels who is believed to have been involved in the abduction and killing of FCI executive P.C. Ram.
Police said Das was trained in sophisticated arms and bomb-making techniques and was involved in several bomb and grenade explosions in the city in the past few years.
An intelligence officer of Assam police said the 25-year-old rebel — popularly known as Joon and Bhagin among his Ulfa colleagues — was identified by a few of his friends and acquaintances today.
Senior superintendent of police (city) P.C. Saloi said he was one among the “most wanted” Ulfa rebels of the outfit’s 709 battalion, which is active in lower Assam and Guwahati.
The slain militant hails from the same village where Ram was killed in a crossfire between the police and Ulfa militants on July 11, 2007.
“We have a strong suspicion that he played a role in Ram’s kidnapping as he hails from Borka village near Changsari in Kamrup district where the official was held captive by his abductors. But I cannot comment further because the case (of Ram’s killing) is currently being probed by the CBI,” Saloi said.
The intelligence source said Das joined Ulfa in 2003 and trained at militant camps in Myanmar.
“We had information that he was among a couple of Ulfa men who fled Borka village on bicycles just before the encounter in which Ram was killed,” the source added.
