Centre committed to illuminate entire Arunachal: Minister

Itanagar, Feb 22 : The Congress-led UPA government at the Centre with its flagship programme ''Border Village Illumination Project'' was committed to provide electricity to every nook and corner of Arunachal Pradesh in a small span of time, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah today said.
Inaugurating the three-day 'Festival of Arunachal' coinciding with the 24th edition of Statehood Day at Indira Gandi Park here, Dr Abdullah praised Arunachal Pradesh for nature's bounty.
''Your state need to be developed and I believe that with blessings of the Centre and under the able leadership of Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu, the state will shine as one of the developed states of the nation in days to come,'' the minister said to the thunderous applause of the people.
Comparing Arunachal with Kashmir from where he belongs, Dr Abdullah lamented that the terrorist problem in the valley was creation of the neighbouring country, while Arunachal was still free from the menace.
Assuring all possible help from his ministry in providing electricity to all the remote villages of Arunachal, Dr Abdullah said with a huge hydro-power potentials, the state would develop into the powerhouse of the country within a span of few years.
Asserting that he would talk to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the criteria of allocation of fund to Arunachal based on geographical area instead of population basis, the minister hoped that things would materialise in right direction.
''We want Arunachal to rise to the greatest height of development and shine like a bright star in the country's map,'' he said, adding that with various power projects in the pipeline, the state would be a future model state for the country.
The minister also laid the foundation stone of three small hydro projects for Tawang district namely, Nyuri Mago (2X2000 KW), Thingbu (2X1500 KW) and Tawang Gonpachu (2X1500 KW).
Later in the day, Dr Abdullah also declared the festival open by releasing balloons in the air.
Food village, exhibitions, flower competition, dance competition, marathon, indigenous sports and games display, singing competition, poem writing competiton, cultural display by various tribes and traditional fashion show were the major highlights of the three-day tourism extravaganza.
