Assam's 'Flag-cake' controversy reaches court

Guwahati: A case has been filed against Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and Governor J B Patnaik by a senior Opposition leader for ''showing disrespect to the National Tricolour'' as they had cut a cake resembling the flag on Republic Day.

Senior opposition leader and renowned lawyer HRA Chaudhury filed a case against the Chief Minister, Governor and a few other senior police officers as well as the Chief Secretary for cutting and eating the cake.

The cake, resembling the National Tricolour, was ordered by the Raj Bhawan and was jointly cut by Mr Gogoi and Mr Patnaik on the afternoon of Republic Day on January 26.

The Chief Minister's Office issued an apology on behalf of Mr Gogoi last week as the main opposition political parties raised a hue and cry. The opposition even approached President Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh alleging disrespect to the National Tricolour.

''It was not intentional and I was requested by the Governor and I had no clue what was the cake. But if I have to go to jail, I shall,'' he said today while talking to reporters when asked about the court case slapped on him.

The Raj Bhawan has, however, maintained a cryptic silence on the whole issue and refused to make any apology.
