She is a human rights` activist spearheading an emphatic and passionate plea for the Rights of Women at the United Nations. Sr Sangma has made the entire Northeast proud with her services to her congregation for the last twelve years or so.
Her Congregation, the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians(FMA) is accorded ``Consultative Status`` by the United Nations. Perhaps, part of the credit goes to her.
Sr Sangma also holds a doctorate in education from Universita` Pontificia Salesiana Rome.
Her doctoral thesis under the title: Education of Women in Northeast India: A Historical Study on the Presence of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians 1923 to 1953 was published in Shillong last year. The study examines the situation in which the pioneering FMA Sisters found themselves, how they sought to respond to the urgent demands of the place, the hardships and difficulties they encountered, the process of consolidation and the initial impact of their educational endeavours especially in the upliftment of poor rural women.
Since 1999, Sr Sangma has been working in Rome as a consultant to the FMA General Council in the field of empowerment of women with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM). In this quality, she also participates at the annual meetings of the UN Commission on the Status of Women.
Among her other contributions are the articles written on the issues concerning women in the Review of Sciences of Education of the Pontifical Faculty of Sciences of Education - Auxilium. Since 2006, she is a visiting professor in the Institute for Youth Ministry of Tangaza College, Nairobi. Guwahati, Dec. 1. Rome, 29 November: The priests and religious of Northeast India studying/working in the Eternal City came together for a Fellowship at the Salesian Pontifical University on 29 November to mark the Silver Jubilee of the Religious profession of Sr. Bernadette Sangma fma. The coming together of 52 priests and religious belonging to various congregations and dioceses was, indeed, an ``agapeic`` fellowship!
