Guwahati, Oct. 1: The small and medium enterprises in Assam will be getting more help from Export-Import Bank of India to improve their competitiveness and access the new markets thanks to a $100-million ADB loan.
Assam is the only state from the Northeast and one among the four states that have been selected to get the help.
The announcement was made by the ADB yesterday.
There are around 20 lakh registered small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Assam and the sector plays a crucial role in generating employment and creating new entrepreneurs in the state.
The ADB is extending the loan facility to the bank which has a separate division for the SME sector to boost the export potential of the enterprises in the poor and the disadvantaged regions that have largely missed out on the country’s trade boom.
A senior official of the bank in Guwahati said 16 entrepreneurs in the SME sector had been getting assistance, including import of equipment, since 2003 when the bank launched its operations.
The bank said though the country’s economy has grown sharply in the recent years, small and medium enterprises in many impoverished regions lack the resources, infrastructure, access to markets and the competitive ability to take part in export value chains and have largely missed out on the benefits of global trade, including higher incomes and reduced poverty.
Exim Bank has also carried out a study on export potential of Mizoram.
It said the comparative advantage of the state lies in high value horticulture and floriculture products, handlooms and handicrafts besides products with export potential, including passion fruit, ginger, mandarin orange, grapes, banana, bird’s eye chilli, wild mushroom, anthurium, medicinal plants and handicraft products.
