10 districts of Assam zeroed in on for pulses component under NFSM

The ministry of agriculture has included ten districts of Assam under pulses component of the National Food Security Mission (NFSM) for the year 2010-11. This was announced by the Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar through a letter to chief minister Tarun Gogoi recently.

Pulses are one of the major components of National Food Security Mission (NFSM). NFSM (Pulses) is under operation in 171 districts across 14 states where productivity of pulses is low. Around 5 districts in Jharkhand and 10 in Assam are being added to the NFSM (Pulses) as focus districts from April 1, 2010. So as to give even higher thrust on raising production and productivity of pulses, the pulses programme of the Integrated Scheme of Oilseeds, Pulses, Oil Palm and Maize (ISOPAM) and NFSM (Pulses) are being merged in terms of components as well as area.

Pawar said the ministry acceded to the Assam government’s request to include ten districts of Assam viz., Barpeta, Nagaon, Sonitpur, Dhubri, Baksa, Kamrup (Rural), Jorhat, Udalguri, Bongaigaon and Kokrajhar under NFSM-Pulses.

The union minister further said he would appreciate if the Assam government submitted the Action Plan as per the operational guidelines of NFSM-Pulses to the Central government indicating the intervention-wise physical and financial targets for the year 2010-11.
