Security beefed up in Meghalaya ahead of Republic Day

Security has been beefed up in Meghalaya ahead of the Republic Day celebrations with the Border Security Force (BSF) keeping an extra-vigil along the India-Bangla border.

Although there was no specific information about possible militant attacks to disrupt Republic Day functions, police officials here today said security measures had been stepped up in certain areas, while combing operations were on in the inter-state Meghalaya-Assam border.

The Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), a militant outfit, has called for a 24-hour bandh from 1800 hours tomorrow to protest the 60th Republic Day celebration.

''Combing operation is going on in Meghalaya-Assam border to flush out ULFA and NDFB militants from the area,'' Meghalaya Additional Director General of Police B Kezo told UNI.

He said the police had also intensified round-the-clock patrolling and check posts were installed in all the entry points to the state.

BSF personnel guarding the porous Indo-Bangla border have been asked to keep an extra vigil to thwart attempts by North East-based ultras to sneak into India from their hideouts in Bangladesh.

Incidentally, another militant outfit of the state, Achik National Volunteers' Council (ANVC), demanding for an autonomous Garoland and under a ceasefire agreement with the government, has not boycotted the celebrations for many years.

Therefore, for the past few years, Independence and Republic Day are being celebrated in Garo Hills without a hitch. Security has been beefed up in Meghalaya ahead of the Republic Day celebrations with the Border Security Force (BSF) keeping an extra-vigil along the India-Bangla border.
