Security for power station in Tripura

Home ministry sends directive in wake of terror attacks

Agartala, Jan 7 : The Union home ministry has asked all the power stations in the Northeast to step up security measures in view of the threat of terrorist attacks.

Security has been beefed up all over the Northeast in the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks and the serial bomb blasts in Guwahati, Agartala and Imphal. The home ministry has issued a fresh circular asking the states to tighten vigil at all important installations in the region.

“None of the power stations in the region are now safe, so tighter security has been urged. Moreover, abandoned airports in the states are also to be brought under the security net,” official sources in the home department said.

Apart from the state-run stations, all power stations and sub-stations under Power Grid Corporation have been warned of the looming threat and asked to strictly follow security guidelines.

The North East Electrical Power Corporation (Neepco) has power generating stations at Ramchandra Nagar, Loktak in Manipur and Kathalguri and Umrangsu in Assam.

Besides, big and small power stations dot the northeastern states. Built by Neepco or state governments, the transmission is taken care of by Power Grid.

“What has injected an element of urgency in this sector is the recovery of a huge cache of arms and ammunition stockpiled by Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup militants of Manipur near Loktak,” sources said. The militants had recently targeted the power transmission lines but the attack was foiled by security forces.

Sources, however, admitted that the security dragnet in and around the power stations in Tripura was “loose” till now but the matter “is being reviewed” in the wake of circular from the Union home ministry.

A company of TSR jawans guard the 42MW Barmura thermal power plant in view of threat from the banned All Tripura Tiger Force and National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) militants. State police constables provide security cover at the 50MW thermal power plant at Rookhia.

The lone 10MW hydro-electrical project at Dumbur in South Tripura has virtually no security. “We have also asked the Tripura State Electrical Power Corporation to conduct a security survey and submit a report,” sources said. Home ministry sends directive in wake of terror attacks
